Reminders About Working With an Executive Search Firm
That seemingly impressive C-suite job offer you’ve received may be hiding a critical red flag that will damage you for years to come. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. So what is that issue? What is that problem that’s going to be in your way that can damage you for the longest time? And the answer is really very simple. The answer really comes down to no access to the board, no access to decision-makers, no access to the people who ultimately will decide your fate.
So the long and the short of it is, it’s important to make sure that that offer doesn’t hinder you in being successful in that next organization. Because, you know, if you wind up in a situation where you’re disconnected from the people you really report to, if you’re disconnected from leadership, well, they don’t really feel connected to you. They second-guess and they’re ultimately going to get rid of you because they have no allegiance to you or connection with you.
If you don’t have regular access to the board, to the CEO, the top decision-makers, you’re a figurehead. You’re not a leader. Without influence or sponsorship, your ability to lead, drive strategy, and deliver results is going to be compromised. In large organizations, not every C-suite role is going to report to the board, quite obviously. But if you’re the, for example, CMO or CHRO in a public company, you might report to the CEO, not the board. That’s okay. But if you’re going to a smart startup, a mid-sized firm, as long as your reporting structure is clear and your voice is a part of the decision-making conversations, you’ll be okay. But if you’re separated from them in those kind of organizations, you’re dead meat.
