Are you jumping straight into writing your resume and then wondering why it’s not getting results? You’re skipping the MOST powerful step! This #short reveals why creating a detailed skills inventory before you write a single word of your resume is an absolute game-changer.

 

If you’re getting ready to write a resume, I don’t want you to start by writing your resume. I want you to start by thinking of all the skills that you’ve accumulated professionally over the course of your career, with an emphasis on the last few years. Because the fact of the matter is, I want you getting to think about what it is you’ve done, what skills you’ve had that are applicable to your next organization.

So, put together a skills inventory for yourself. Think of things that you’ve used at work, or maybe you volunteered somewhere and used particular skills. This is because it’s going to remind you of things that you might otherwise have forgotten about. You can add to these; you can subtract these.

Think in terms of what are the most important skills for the kind of work you want to be doing. Or, and this is my preference, list everything. List all the skills that you’ve acquired since entering the workforce, with an emphasis on the last 5 to 10 years. It’s going to make resume writing a lot easier because you’ll be able to correlate those skills with the work that you’ve done and the work you’re going to be doing.
