Architectural and interior design firm Mitchell Sweibel Studio has completed a significant renovation of a semi-detached Victorian residence in the historic Westmount area of Montreal. The project involved extensive structural work, necessitating the near-total demolition of the interior. Yet, he original staircase and the home’s external character were preserved.
Mitchell Sweibel Studio’s approach for the redesigned interior prioritizes an open layout on the ground level to facilitate family interaction and accommodate entertaining. The upper floor of the semi-detached Victorian residence is configured to provide both communal areas and private retreats, including a converted sunroom office and a master suite with a hierarchically distinct entrance. A conscious effort was made to blend historical elements with modern interventions, utilizing a material palette of plaster, walnut, and micro-cement to create a cohesive aesthetic that bridges the home’s traditional exterior and its contemporary interior.
