Listing All Those Temp or Consulting Assignments

Have you been a temp or consultant? Do you have lots of assignments that you need to list on your resume?

7 Things to Do When Your Job Search Calendar is Empty

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff organizations for more than 40 years and helping businesses grow in a host of different ways. Today, I want to talk with you about how do you list all those consulting or temp assignments on your resume and if you follow this standard advice, you wind up having a bunch of three and six month assignments or two and three week temp assignments on your resume and you convey the image of being a job hopper and you know employers hate job hoppers.

So, what do you do? This is one of the easiest fixes you can imagine. You list all these jobs. You list all these assignments.

I don’t care how many years of work you have listed. Put them all in. But, preceding it, you create an aggregate category.

The category says consulting or temp assignments. Even if they were through different firms, you list one aggregate category, consulting assignments, temp assignments, freelance work, whatever it is and to the right, you put the aggregated dates for how long you did this. So, let’s say from, I don’t know, five years ago till now you’ve worked as a consultant.

You put that initial date five years back to present, consultant, temp, whatever it is and then list all of them underneath. This way, you’re able to get around the bias that organizations have or the fear that organizations have. That’s probably a more accurate term that all you’re going to do is work with them for a couple of months and then go leave.
