Kimono-Sukajan Fusion Fashion : YAMATO Lab.

The YAMATO Lab. pop-up at Isetan Shinjuku curates a collection of one-off sukajan patchwork jackets inspired by traditional “Hyakutoku Kimono.” Led by creative director Keisuke Kanda, YAMATO Lab., a contemporary project from century-old kimono maker Kimono Yamato, reimagines vintage kimono fabrics into modern streetwear pieces featuring asymmetrical silk panels and rare dye treatments like batik and Yuzen. The limited-edition jackets draw on ancient craftsmanship with a bold, modern sensibility.

The pop-up will run August 6–12, offering live embroidery demonstrations using horizontal stitching machines and exclusive jackets featuring landmark scenes of Shinjuku in rare embroidery. Previous collections—including sukajan kimono and yukata remakes—will also be available alongside new haori items. Visitors can engage with the artisans and explore Yamato Lab.’s ongoing dialogue between Japan’s sartorial past and its evolving fashion identity.
