Like so many others, when I first saw K-Pop Demon Hunters on Netflix last year, my first thought was: I need more. Unfortunately, even though we got a sing-along version, some funny appearances by the voice cast on various late night shows, and a brief run in theaters, actual bonus content related to the blockbuster film never really materialized… until today.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Netflix has uploaded a new miniseries on the service KPop Demon Hunters Bonus Content. This sounded pretty exciting, as I was expecting some featurettes with behind-the-scenes secrets and interviews about the making of the film. But unfortunately the reality was much different.
What is K-Pop Demon Hunters Bonus Content?
Less than 10 minutes of TikTok-style videos
When a user selects this title they’ll see four episodes to choose from, with the following runtimes and descriptions:
- 1. Golden Across the Globe (1m 59s) The hit song “Golden” set the world on fire and became a global smash. See some of the best fan-made musical covers in this compilation of popular clips.
- 2. Family Is Golden (2m 16s) From at-home sing-alongs and dance parties to epic group costumes, the magic of “KPop Demon Hunters” has brought families together in all the best ways.
- 3. Talent Reacts to Fan Videos (2m 51s) The singing voices of HUNTR/X — EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI — share candid reactions to a lineup of fearless fan performances, funny takes and more.
- 4. Cosplay Mode Activated (2m 1s) These fans came to play! The world of “KPop Demon Hunters” inspired an outpouring of creativity – and some truly amazing transformations.
As you have probably noticed, these videos are very short, and feel more like TikTok content than actual bonus material. In fact the first, second, and fourth episodes are almost entirely composed of clips sourced from the social media platform, which means, if you’re a fan of the movie and are on TikTok… you’ve probably seen these videos before.
This is pretty disappointing for myself and other fans who wanted more from this title than just recycled TikTok videos, but I guess for young fans who don’t have access to social media, this might be an interesting way to burn 10 minutes.
Is more K-Pop Demon Hunters coming soon?
The sequel is still years away
Though I’m sure Netflix would love nothing more than to put out K-Pop Demon Hunters 2 tomorrow, unfortunately the wait for the sequel will be a long one, as Sony Animation is projecting a 2029 release or later due to their busy animation slate. This is definitely not the news fans want, but the Oscar-nominated film is still performing well almost a year after its initial release, as it is still in Netflix’s top 10 movie list as of this week, and with over 325 million views overall, easily tops Netflix’s all-time movie viewership list.
