I’ve never been laid off fired, RIF’d or otherwise pushed out by a company. I’ve made a career out of helping people pick up the pieces after a job loss, a job failure, or having to tolerate the intolerable at work. We all can quote one statistic or another that points to the importance of networking.
We all know that job search networking shouldn’t only be done during times of crisis. It is a lifetime/life long activity yet most people lurch from job search to job search only then reactivating their network. What goes under the radar is personal branding and developing a reputation for what we do.
I understand that people don’t like to think of themselves like detergent or toilet paper, but we can learn a lot from the aisles of a supermarket about personal branding. After all, have you ever seen someone pick up two detergents and compare the list of ingredients and make the decision to buy one vs another based upon the interrelationship between the chemicals in one vs another?
I just picked up a client based on a podcast interview I did about 9 years ago. I wasn’t even the expert. I was the host. I was associated with the expert and they came to me.
