A viewer was curious about whether it was OK to refer someone to a recruiter even though they, themselves, were not interested in the job.
Big Company Person Interviewing at a Small Company?
The question I received for someone is, is it okay to refer someone to a recruiter after turning down an opportunity from them? I’m not going to beat around the bush.
The answer is, yeah. What is a recruiter hired to do? A recruiter is hired to fill a position. You may not be interested in what they have to offer, but you’re helping them by referring your friend to them, by referring your former colleague or your colleague to them.
It’s a good thing. They will appreciate it. Now, if you’re just referring some piece of spam to them, I’ll just give an example that always happened with me.
The person who I contact for the manager or director role, referring the person who is not a manager or director person, but aspires to be that, they’re not going to fill that job. Another example used to be the, you know, I’m trying to hire a developer and I’m getting a business analyst referred to me. Two completely different functions, right? Once you’ve heard about the position, you have a roadmap for the job and you can say to them, tell me a little bit more.
I’m not interested, but I may know someone. And they’ll go into it a little bit more detail. Ask another follow up question or two for them because that’s going to let them know that you’re trying to really think about it.
And then, you know, say to them, I want to send you someone’s name and number. I’m going to message them now and I’m going to include you in the message. So just reply all so that I know you’ve gotten back and gotten in touch with them and they’ll know that I’m the frame of reference for the introduction.
And after that, you can take me out of the loop, but it just lets me know that I’ve made the referral. You’ve replied back and it’s all being handled. It’s just, yes, they want referrals from people because referrals are often, in the recruiter’s mind, a good source for a client because a person who they believe to be qualified for the role is referring someone else who understands what the role might be.
Again, don’t give them spam referrals. Don’t give them garbage referrals. It has to be something valid for the role or another role that they’re recruiting for.
Otherwise, you’re just wasting their time and you look very foolish. So that’s today’s show. I hope you found it helpful.
And if you did, here are a few more ways to get more from me. First of all, there’s my website, which is TheBigGameHunter.us.
