A tragic scene unfolded in Chatham, Illinois, after a vehicle crashed into an after-school camp, leaving multiple children dead and others seriously injured. The heartbreaking incident has rocked the local community and sparked a growing call for answers. According to the NYP, the woman behind the wheel of the SUV that killed four at the after-school camp has been identified as 44-year-old Marianne Akers.

Who Were The Victims?
The incident happened at approximately 3:20 p.m. on April 28, 2025. Authorities say Akers allegedly drove her SUV into the YNOT Outdoors After School Camp, striking several people before crashing through the building and exiting on the other side. The camp crash left a total of 10 people injured. Sadly, officials confirmed that three girls — two 7-year-olds and an 8-year-old — along with an 18-year-old young woman, lost their lives in the incident. The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Kathryn Corley, 7; Alma Buhnerkempe, 7; Ainsley Johnson, 8; and 18-year-old Rylee Britton.
Additionally, the coroner’s office reports that all four victims died from multiple blunt force injuries. The three younger girls were from Chatham, and the oldest victim, Rylee Britton, was from nearby Springfield.
According to police, three of the victims were outside when they were hit, while one was struck inside after the SUV crashed through the building. Six additional children were hospitalized with injuries, including one airlifted to a trauma center. One child remained in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.

As of Tuesday morning, the Illinois State Police stated that the crash does not appear to have been a targeted attack, and the exact cause remains under investigation. Police noted that toxicology results are still pending. Marianne Akers, who was alone in the car, walked away from the scene without injuries. She has not yet been arrested or charged. The investigation remains ongoing as the community continues to grieve.
