By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Is it OK for someone to do this? I don’t know what to do.
It’s Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who works with people to improve workplace-related matters. Job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, being more effective at work.
And someone wrote with a question. Is it acceptable for a manager who would let me go without cause to then say negative things when contacted by my future employers? I think you’re misreading the situation. They had a reason.
You just don’t understand it. You think that there was no reason for them to let you go, no cause for them to do it. Clearly, they did.
Now, if you think that it was for economic reasons, then you have to go talk to your manager and say, you know, I don’t get this. You laid me off for economic reasons. And now you’re telling new employers critical things that are going to cause me not to get hired.
Now, I want to say something to you very clearly. If you insist on doing this, you will hear from a lawyer because that isn’t what you’ve told me. And thus, what’s happened here is you’re keeping me from getting work.

If you want to keep doing that, trust me, I will own your home. That’s your choice. And you have to look them in the eye or have as casual a conversation as I’ve presented to you.
If you insist on doing this, I will own your home. I don’t want to take your home. I just want to get a job.
Stop it. Okay? Stop it. Do I have your agreement to that? And if they say no, I said, I’m going to have a reference checked very soon.
If I lose that job, I’m going to find out because under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I have the right to know what the reference was that was given about me, and I’ll know it came from you. So, that’s your choice. I’m going to let you make it on your own.
But that is your decision. And that is what will happen. So, back to the idea of no reason, they have a reason.
You just don’t like it. You don’t believe it. You don’t consider it valid.
It is a reason. I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this helpful.
