Walmart Canada has partnered with Montreal-based Lufa Farms to introduce an innovative urban agriculture initiative that will make hyperlocal produce available to consumers. To achieve the distinction of hyperlocal produce, the veggies offered through this partnership are grown in a 127,000-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse atop the Marché Central Walmart Supercentre. This marks the first time Lufa Farms’ rooftop-grown vegetables — including tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers — will be available through a retail partner, with harvested crops reaching store shelves in as little as one hour after picking.
The hyperlocal produce-focused collaboration between Walmart Canada and Lufa Farms leverages underutilized urban space while implementing sustainable farming practices, such as energy-efficient LED lighting and a closed-loop water system that recycles up to 90% of water usage. By eliminating long-distance transportation and reducing resource consumption, the project aligns with growing consumer demand for fresh, eco-conscious food options.
