How to Change Careers Part 2

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

This is my 2nd video in the series about changing careers. Grab a pen and paper or your iPad and be prepared to do some homework. (from the archives)

Career Reinvention

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ.com. And today I’m going to do the second in a series of videos that’s designed to help you with changing careers. Because after all, some of you, like me, have gotten to a point professionally where it’s time to look at other alternatives.

I don’t care what your age is. If you’re a geezer like me or someone much younger, you’ve just come to realize that this is not fulfilling work that you’re doing. You want to do something else.

But you just don’t know quite what to do. So this is the second in my series. And today, we’re going to look at some questions that are going to help you with your evaluation of alternatives.

Because if you’re not sure about what to do next, I want to kind of instigate your mind to start thinking in new directions. So this is a homework assignment I’m giving you. And it’s going to be a series of questions designed to help cultivate your thinking about what your alternatives are.

So, got to write this down. It’s not enough to think the answer. I want you to grab a pen and paper or an iPad and just sit down and do some writing.

Reinventing Your Career: Expert Advice for a Successful Transition

And question number one, I want you to ask is, what do I enjoy regardless of the opinions of others? I just think it’s a great opening question that allows you to stand out from the thinking of others that I know I’m certainly influenced by. What would I love doing enough that I would do it for free is the next question. If I had to teach something, what would I teach? What do I do that causes time to just . . . I lose track of time.

It’s really that simple. I just get into the flow and I’m doing a bunch of stuff. What do people typically ask me for help with? What makes me feel great about myself? Now, these are the starting questions for this process.

So far, I believe I’ve given you six questions. I forgot the number of them when I wrote them. Sorry.

I think it’s six questions I’ve given you so far. Let me go on to the final ones. Is there a cause that you believe in or really feel strongly about? What are your favorite things that you’ve done in the past? And what are they that you’ve done now? What has hurt in the past that you don’t want others to go through? Yeah, I think that’s where we’re going to stop is at that point.

You know, when all is said and done, I want you to connect with yourself in doing this process, to really think about it and explore and feel stuff. I think that’s really the way to go here. So, take some time.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more for you. But for today, take some time and review. Hope you found this helpful and hope you have a great day.

Take care
