You can apply for a minor PAN Card as a parent or guardian by visiting the government-authorised NSDL Portal and following the steps below.

Registering the Minor PAN Application

1. Open the NSDL portal. On the homepage, select New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A) from the ‘Select PAN Application Type’ drop-down menu. Similarly, select ‘Individual‘ under ‘Select Applicant Category’.

2. Scroll down a bit and fill in details such as the title, in which you select Shri for males and Kumari for unmarried females. Along with this, enter your Full Name with the first name, middle name (if applicable), and your last name.

3. Additionally, you would also have to enter the date of birth of the minor. Since the parents and guardians will be managing the PAN, it is recommended that they put their email ID and contact number. Now, tick the checkbox accepting the terms and conditions, and after validating the captcha, hit ‘Submit’.

A token number will be generated and sent to you via the email address you provided. Here, hit ‘continue’. Also keep in mind that the application form will have to be completed within 30 days, as mentioned on the webpage.

4. Now opt for the physical copy that would be delivered to your address, along with the soft copy to your email. Along with that, enter the last 4 digits of your Aadhar and select the gender of your ward.

5. Enter the full name of the parents, and select whose name you would like to be printed on the PAN Card. Before proceeding further, click on ‘Save Draft’ in the top right corner.

6. Proceed by entering other details, such as income (which is not applicable for minors, so select ‘No income’), residence address, and leave office address as blank (also not applicable).

7. Under Representative Assessee, select ‘Yes’ and add the details of the parent or guardian, such as title, name, and address. Now click ‘Next’.

8. To fill the AO Code, which is based on the Income Tax Office near you, select ‘Indian Citizen’ under ‘For help for AO Code, select from the following’. Now select your state and your city, and click ‘Fetch’ and select the nearest Income Tax Office. The fields for the AO code would be filled automatically. Now click ‘Next’.

Verification, Payment & PAN Delivery

Now, you would have to select the enclosed document for Proof of identity, address, and birth. In the case of a minor, an AADHAR card would suffice for all of them. In the declaration, you would see the parents’ names displayed. There, select Representative Assessee, enter the place and date, and click ‘Submit’.

You would get a prompt saying, ” Application is submitted. Below this, enter the first 8 digits of the AADHAR and verify all the other details submitted previously. If there is any mistake, click ‘edit’; otherwise, click ‘proceed’. Now make the payment by selecting any of the payment options on your screen. Furthermore, click ‘continue’ on the payment receipt page and after accepting the terms and conditions, click ‘Authenticate’.

Hit ‘Generate and Print’ and click ‘Download PDF’. This would be a password-protected document, and the password would be the applicant’s date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.

You would have to get this document printed and paste 2 passport-sized photographs of the applicant, attested by the signatures of the representative assessee. Moreover, a copy of the AADHAR would have to be sent along with this to the Income Tax Office in Pune. For which the address will be displayed on your screen.

Once the documents are delivered and your application is processed, you will be sent a digital copy (e-PAN) via email. Also, the physical PAN Card will be delivered to your address within 10-15 days.

Difference Between Minor PAN and Normal PAN

The Minor PAN is somewhat similar to the Normal PAN in terms of structure, but there are still some differences:

  • A Minor PAN does not include the signature and photograph of the individual. The parents’ or guardians’ details are linked to the PAN card, instead.
  • For financial transactions, a minor cannot use the PAN independently. Until the individual reaches adulthood, all activities, including the PAN, must be carried out by the parents or guardians.
