Photography has the power to tell stories, capture emotions, and preserve moments that would otherwise fade. For young photographers, opportunities to showcase their work on a large platform can be life-changing. This year, Jourdanton, Texas, youth photographer Zella made a name for herself with her compelling black-and-white photograph, Day at the Ranch. Her image was selected from over 513 entries to be featured in the prestigious Rodeo Austin Art Show, an event that highlights young artistic talent while raising funds for scholarships. More than just a striking visual, Day at the Ranch tells a story of resilience, hard work, and the cowboy way of life—a timeless tribute to the grit of those who work the land.

Capturing the hard work of a cowboy
Zella’s award-winning image focuses on a cowboy from the waist down, emphasizing his rugged hands gripping the saddle horn. The composition draws attention to the wear and tear on his hands—a visual representation of years spent working under the Texas sun. Instead of showing the cowboy’s face, Zella chose to tell his story through texture and detail. The saddle, the worn leather, and the way his fingers grip the horn speak volumes about the life he leads.
“I wanted to capture the essence of a cowboy’s dedication,” Zella explained. “His hands are rough and worn, showing the life he leads. Every crease and callus tells a story of hard work.”
Her decision to focus on this perspective rather than a full-body or face portrait adds mystery, depth, and emotion, inviting viewers to imagine the cowboy’s journey for themselves.

The power of timeless photography
One of the most striking aspects of Day at the Ranch is Zella’s choice to process the image in black and white. While color photography can be powerful, removing color brings a sense of timelessness and emotional depth to the image.
“Color can sometimes take away from the emotion of an image,” Zella shared. “Black and white lets you focus on the textures, the grit, and the emotion behind the subject. You see the hard lines, the details in the saddle, the veins in his hands—it’s all more powerful without color as a distraction.”
By opting for black and white, Zella created a classic, documentary-style composition that echoes the work of legendary western photographers. The choice also eliminates distractions, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in the details and storytelling within the frame.
Editing the image with Luminar Neo
Every great photograph requires careful refinement to bring out its full potential. To achieve the perfect contrast, depth, and detail, Zella worked with her mentor, Angie Birmingham, using Luminar Neo—a powerful AI-driven photo editing tool.
Together, they:
- Converted the image to black and white, ensuring deep contrast and a dramatic look.
- Adjusted the black tones to emphasize shadows and depth.
- Used the Details Tool to refine textures, enhancing low, medium, and high details to ensure every element—the leather, the hands, and the saddle horn—stood out with clarity.
Zella’s careful editing choices preserved the authenticity of the scene while enhancing its visual impact.
