Better Than Applying Through The ATS

If you’re over 50, 60, or even 70 and emailing resumes or uploading it to an applicant tracking system and not getting interviews, maybe it isn’t your age that’s the problem. Maybe it’s the fact that your resume is signaling your age in a variety of different ways. I’m Jeff Alen, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for NOBS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. So, as you probably know, most companies use applicant tracking systems, the ATS, to filter resumes before someone even sees them. If your formatting, language, even file type is even a little bit off, you’re going to get rejected because the system’s been programmed to do that.

Now, let me just point out a couple of simple resume mistakes people make. Number one is “30 years of experience,” “25 years of experience.” Don’t use terms like that in your summary because all you’re doing is telling people you’re old. Instead, focus on what you’ve done: “Program manager responsible for implementing solutions that” — notice, no years reference there, no “30 years of experience.” Focus on what you’ve done in your objective. Even in your dates, focus on the last 10 to 15 years of your experience because that’s really what matters to firms. After all, with 30 years of experience, do you think that they want to hire you based upon work you did in the last century? Of course not.

Also, with your formatting, get rid of the tables, the headers, the footers. You know, if they ask for a PDF, give it to them, but most of the time they don’t want it because the systems struggle to read them. So, give them a clean .doc file or a .docx file without graphics or photos or columns. That’s what the systems really want.

In terms of your tech experience, get rid of the obsolete stuff like Word Perfect or Lotus Notes or Microsoft Office Proficiency. Instead, give it more current terms such as Salesforce, Slack, ChatGPT, pivot tables, things along those lines that will reflect more current experience than what you have.

And then, to get through the AI, think in terms of powerful terms, powerful verbs that are going to communicate excellence to people. Use terms like led, launched, accelerated, built, not just simply responsible for. And lastly, you know, the resume isn’t old, you just need to translate your experience into language AI understands.
