Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I’ve got another one of those fun interview questions that’s designed to trip you up. I need to read it because I don’t want to miss any of the points to it. Ready? A box contains two quarters.
One is a double-headed coin and the other is an ordinary coin. Heads on one side and tails on the other. You draw one of the coins from a box and look at one of the sides.
Assuming it’s heads, what is the possibility that the other side shows heads also? Now, the first time I thought of an answer, my instinct was to say there was a 50% probability but I paused and I paid more attention to the question and realized that that couldn’t be possible. Here’s why. When the coin is drawn, there are four possibilities.

There’s heads and heads. That’s one coin. Heads and heads . . . because it’s the other side of the same of that double-sided coin, right? So, heads and heads appears twice.
There’s heads and tails and then there’s tails and heads. Now, the trick to this is they’re telling you right away that you’re seeing heads so that fourth option isn’t there, right? So, there are three possible alternatives. Both of them involve double heads.
One is a heads and a tail. So, the correct answer is there’s a two-thirds probability that the other side is also going to be a heads because that fourth one was eliminated. Very clever little question.
