McDonald, who returns as Happy’s nemesis, first teased word of the sequel to the 1996 film. He had mentioned to Drew Barrymore that Sandler showed him an early script for the followup film.

Netflix officially ordered the film in May of last year. Sandler, who has a longtime deal with the streamer with films like Murder Mystery and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, co-wrote the script with original co-writer Tim Herlihy.

The film is produced by Happy Madison, Sandler’s production company named after Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.
