A Canadian teenager’s school ski trip turned tragic after she died from a freak chairlift accident.
The 13-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was attempting to get off the chairlift when her clothing became entangled in the machinery on Wednesday, the police said.
Her hoodie was snagged in the lift, cutting off her ability to breathe, the Montreal Gazette reported.
The Ottawa girl was with her classmates on a school ski trip in western Quebec at Centre Vorlage, according to CBC News.
Witnesses were unable ‘to take her off the chair,’ and they decided the ‘easiest’ way to rescue her was to bring her back down the hill, per MRC des Collines Sgt Martin Fournel.
First responders and two doctors who happened to be on the slope stood ready at the base of the hill as the girl was brought down.
By the time she reached the bottom, she was no longer breathing. Medics performed CPR before rushing her to a nearby hospital.
The teen was later taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where she died on Sunday.
‘The police investigation is still active and ongoing,’ Fournel told Daily Mail.

He added that authorities are coordinating with the Régie du Bâtiment du Québec, the provincial agency that oversees the safety of ski hill infrastructure, to determine how the accident occurred.
‘A Coroner [will also be] involved because she died yesterday,’ he told Daily Mail.
‘As far as the police investigation goes, it’s too early to decide if any criminal charges will be laid,’ Fournel said.
The children’s hospital released a statement from the girl’s grief-stricken family on Sunday.
They wrote that they are ‘devastated,’ but also thanked the community for the ‘support and the outpouring of love.’
‘We would like to extend our love to all of those affected by this terrible tragedy,’ the family said, adding that they are grateful for the heroic responders.
‘Her sweet, bubbly spirit and love for those around her will live on through the lives she has touched and the lives she has saved through Trillium Gift of Life organ donation.’
The ski resort expressed their condolences on Facebook, calling it a ‘tragic accident.’

First responders rushed to the scene and waited at the bottom of the slope for the girl to come back down, two doctors were also happened to be on the scene at the time

The resort remained closed throughout the weekend, and they are cooperating with the ongoing investigation
‘Our entire organization is deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, and the members of her school community as they mourn this devastating loss,’ they wrote.
Centre Vorlage added that they are cooperating with the police for the ongoing investigation.
Social workers were sent to support the roughly 20 witnesses and responding police officers, CBC reported.
‘Let’s just say that was a very difficult scene to watch for many witnesses,’ Fournel said, per the outlet.
The 13-year-old’s school, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, said Thursday that their thoughts are with the student, her family, and the community, and added Friday that all ski trips would be canceled for the time being.
Centre Vorlage, located about 18 miles north of downtown Ottawa, remained closed throughout the weekend.
