In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses how to find more people to network with on LinkedIn.
38 Deadly Interview Mistakes to Avoid
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for 40 plus years. A lot of people take the lazy approach to searching LinkedIn by using the search box on the top of their profile page or the search box at the top of their home page to do a basic search but, frankly, that’s a waste.
Here’s why. Instead of using the search box, I want you to click on the button to the right of that or the word advanced to the right of that and you’re going to be taken to a page that has advanced search features and, excuse me, I’m going to stare at the screen to ensure I cover all the points but, first of all, the default for searching appears to be first and second level connections as well as group members. Click the third and everyone else button.
You want to be searching all your groups. You want to be searching by keywords. If you know who this person is, you can search by name, of course, but you can search by company.
You can search by the school the person attended. You can search by location by using the function located in or near so that within the US, you can narrow that to zip code. You know, there’s a lot of ways that you can target people on using the advanced search features.
What language was the profile done in? Now, that may seem idiotic but it is going to screen out the person from Burma who you may not know how to communicate with, who they currently work for, what industry they’re in. There’s a whole host of functions that are far more useful if you try to reach out to people on the advanced features of search than there is on the standard search. So, don’t take the shortcut because you’re going to be really eliminating a lot of people who you could be networking with by doing so.
