Is the old saying, “Don’t tell people you’re looking for a job when you need a job,” a myth or a golden rule? This #short reveals the truth behind this controversial advice.

The person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest or works the hardest, although those are great qualities to have. People get ahead by being alert to opportunities. Sometimes they are internal, but most of the time they’re external.
As far as whether or not you should tell people you’re looking for a job, there’s a school of thought that recruiters do not like to represent people who are actively looking for work. The speaker considers this “stupid” and “wrong thinking” for a variety of reasons. By not mentioning it, you’d be missing out on activating your network to help you.
When discussing a recruiter, whether corporate or third party, who asks “Why are you looking for a job?”, the speaker suggests responding with: “I’m not, you reached out to me. I’m here to listen because frankly, if you’ve got a better opportunity than what I’m in now, I’m happy to listen; I’d be happy to accept. But actively looking for a job? That’s an assumption that you’re making that isn’t valid with me.”.
In general, the speaker would make sure that people knew they were open to other things and would use their network. The statistics show that as many as 85% of positions are filled as a result of networking. By not mentioning your openness, you are taking away that percentage of people.
