When it comes to Award-winning films, Netflix has a treasure trove of options, from original movies like Roma, The Irishman, and even last year’s Frankenstein to modern classics like Marriage Story and 1917. However, this month we are going to have to say goodbye to three Oscar-nominated films of yesteryear as they leave the service in just a few days.
From a cult sci-fi hit that just celebrated its 25th anniversary to one of the most iconic monster movies from the 90s, here are the Oscar-nominated films leaving Netflix this month that you don’t want to miss out on.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula

When it comes to modern Gothic horror and romance, few movies are as influential as Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The film stars Gary Oldman as the titular count, Winona Ryder as Mina, and an arguably miscast Keanu Reeves as Johnathan Harker. The film features lush sets, beautiful costume design, and a story that, while not as entirely faithful to the novel as you might expect given the name, introduces a heavy romance element that almost every adaptation since has incorporated into the evolving Dracula pop culture mythos.
This film went on to win three of the four Academy Awards that it was nominated for, including Best Makeup, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Editing.
Hollow Man

Paul Verhoeven, the iconic director of RoboCop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers set his eye on sci-fi horror in 2000 with Hollow Man, a movie very clearly inspired by the Invisible Man, but with a killer edge. The film may have been released over 25 years ago, but it featured groundbreaking special effects that mostly hold up to this day, and perhaps unsurprisingly, earned a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 2001 Academy Awards.
Though the film had mostly negative reviews upon release, and director Verhoeven has even gone on record saying he regrets making the movie, the film has achieved a sort of cult status among sci-fi horror enthusiasts, in large part due to the diabolical performance of Kevin Bacon as the titular character, who truly seems to delight in torturing the rest of the cast throughout the film’s two hour runtime.
The Wolf of Wall Street

Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street stars Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who gamed the stock market using fraudulent high-pressure sales tactics and made millions of dollars before he was eventually taken down by the FBI. Rounding out the cast are Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, and Kyle Chandler.
The movie picked up five Academy Awards nominations in 2013, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Supporting Actor for Jonah Hill, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It ultimately didn’t win any of these awards, but it did set a Guinness World Record for the most instances of profanity in a film, so maybe don’t watch this one with the kids.
