In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses a number of groups that you should join apart from those on LinkedIn.
Why Do More Companies Rely on Video Interviews?
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. Yesterday, I was interviewing someone for Job Search Radio, who reminded me of something that I think I want to . . . I do want to share with you. And that is when everyone’s fixated on networking online, and they’re fixated on LinkedIn groups as a place where you can get leads and information and stuff like that, they’re forgetting one thing.
And that is there’s another place where there are great groups that are very active, where you can create an impression. And that’s Facebook groups. There are a lot of Facebook professional groups.
And you just have to search for them using graph search up on the top of your page. So, home on the top, use the search area and try to get a search going for as tight a set a list of criteria as possible. So, you don’t want to just search jobs because, you know, if you’re an IT, you’re going to wind up with the plumbing job or if you’re a plumber, you may wind up with the engineering job.
You don’t want to do that. You want to get as specific as possible, including location, to see whether or not there might be some things in your town or your area. So, for example, if I’m using the example of New York, and I live in a small town in New Jersey, the likelihood of the small town having a group is going to be pretty small.
But I might try in northern New Jersey. I might try in New York City or New York as part of the search criteria. Get involved.
Get active. If there are specific areas, for example, of IT that you’re interested in or have experience and you want to network with others, go to that specific function. Then try and look for something by location and see whether you turn up something.
Otherwise, just backtrack and go to the function. But when all is said and done, remember, Facebook has groups, too. They’re very powerful.

They’re very effective. They’re very talkative. Get involved.
