Couple murdered outside Walgreens near golf’s Players Championship were killed by jealous ex, says sheriff

A Florida man is behind bars after a ‘jealous rage’ allegedly led him to gun down a mother-of-two and her companion in a Walgreens parking lot just a mile from the Players Championship.

Christian Barrios, 32, stands accused of the double murder of Melissa Wood, 46, and Jason Chatham, 42, following a night of violence that spilled onto the grounds of the TPC Sawgrass golf course.

St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick confirmed that the shooting, which occurred on the night of March 13, was a ‘domestic violence situation’ rooted in romantic envy.

Investigators believe Barrios targeted Wood, his former girlfriend, over perceived infidelity – a claim her grieving family has since strongly disputed.

In a chilling detail revealed in an arrest warrant, Barrios reportedly had his own mother drive him to the scene of the crime.

The suspect’s mother told deputies her son sat in the back of her car and ‘frantically jumped out’ the moment he spotted Wood’s vehicle at the pharmacy on the A1A Scenic Coastal Byway.

Moments later, the mother recalled hearing a ‘flurry of gunfire’ and immediately called 911 to report the shooting she had unwittingly facilitated.

Deputies responded to multiple 911 calls at approximately 10:30pm, finding both Wood and Chatham suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victims, both residents of nearby Atlantic Beach, were rushed to local hospitals where they tragically succumbed to their injuries.

The subsequent manhunt saw the suspected killer flee across the highway and onto the TPC Sawgrass course, home to one of golf’s most famous events.

During his desperate escape, Barrios reportedly made contact with PGA Tour employees and even snatched a tournament radio, which he later discarded.

The stolen radio proved to be a fatal mistake for the suspect, as K-9 units used the item to lock onto his scent and track him through the prestigious grounds.

The hunt for the ‘armed and dangerous’ felon forced PGA Tour officials to delay opening the gates for the third round of play the following morning.

While the round began on schedule at 8:15 a.m., nearly 35,000 fans were kept waiting outside as hospitality areas remained closed until the perimeter was cleared.

Barrios was eventually apprehended in neighboring Nassau County on Saturday morning after a high-speed chase involving a stolen black BMW.

Police bodycam footage captured the dramatic moment the 32-year-old was cornered on a footpath in the woods, where he dropped to the ground with his hands over his head.

Sheriff Hardwick slammed the suspect’s ’embarrassing’ criminal history, which includes a staggering 27 prior arrests and a 2023 charge for vehicle theft.

‘He is out of prison again on probation, committing another violent felony,’ a visibly frustrated Hardwick told reporters during a press conference.

‘It makes me sick to my stomach… families are going to mourn two people that were shot and killed over a domestic violence situation,’ the Sheriff added.

Barrios now faces a litany of charges including two counts of first-degree murder, burglary, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In Nassau County, he faces additional counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing, and resisting law enforcement.

Wood’s brother, Jeremy Hackward, launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs, stating his sister was ‘gunned down by an insecure, jealous ex-boyfriend.’

He noted that Wood had only just become a grandmother a year ago and leaves behind two children who are struggling to process the senseless violence.

Wood’s daughter also spoke out, disputing the sheriff’s theory of ‘romantic envy’ and suggesting her mother may have simply been trying to help her troubled ex.

‘She had a lot of love to give,’ her daughter said, adding that she hopes to raise her own son with the same compassion her mother showed.

Jason Chatham was also remembered fondly by his niece, Aliya Jade, who posted a touching tribute to her uncle on social media.

‘I will make sure your light never goes dull here on earth while you’re giving heaven the best party ever,’ Jade wrote in the emotional post.

The community of Atlantic Beach has been left reeling by the double homicide, which occurred in a suburb usually known for its quiet, coastal lifestyle.

The Walgreens location, situated less than 1,000 feet from PGA Tour properties, remained a crime scene for hours as forensic teams gathered evidence.

Despite the nearby tragedy, the Players Championship concluded as scheduled, with American favorite Cameron Young taking home the trophy.

Tournament officials expressed their gratitude to law enforcement for their ‘swift and professional’ handling of the situation on the course grounds.

However, the shadow of the double murder loomed large over the final rounds of the ‘Fifth Major’ as details of the jealous rage emerged.

Barrios remains in custody without bond as he awaits his first court appearance to face the murder charges that could carry the death penalty.
