Clean the Sky – Sustainable Marine-Derived Textiles

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

SINTEF, one of Europe’s leading research organizations, is playing a key role in the SeaWeave Project, which explores how seaweed can be used to create more sustainable textiles. The fashion industry currently “relies heavily on synthetic fibers and harmful dyes that contribute to ocean pollution, while most natural alternatives depend on farming that requires large amounts of land and water.”

SeaWeave offers a new approach by using red and brown seaweed—a fast-growing, renewable marine resource—as the base for producing fibers and natural dyes. A team of seven partners from six countries is working together to develop the full process: from growing seaweed to making usable materials for fashion and furniture.

SINTEF is focused on selecting the right seaweed, improving processing methods, and turning seaweed-based ingredients into practical, eco-friendly products. This project supports cleaner oceans and a more sustainable textile future.
