The FISATUR project, short for ‘Fisheries and Sustainable Tourism for Atlantic Regions,’ is a European Union-funded effort to help coastal communities along the Atlantic by combining tourism with environmental protection. Supported by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), the project focuses on areas where traditional fishing is declining and where the marine environment is under pressure.
Running over 28 months, FISATUR helps create eco-friendly tourism experiences like guided fishing trips, local seafood tastings, and cultural tours that teach visitors about the sea and fishing traditions. These activities are designed to support local jobs while also protecting marine life and promoting sustainable fishing.
The project also supports local businesses, encourages international cooperation, and helps fishing communities become leaders in protecting the ocean. FISATUR shows how tourism can be used to build stronger communities and a healthier environment at the same time.
