Meridian Biotech’s $40 million investment in a new Franklin County facility represents a significant advancement in sustainable biotechnology. The company is forging an innovative partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery to transform distillery byproducts into valuable alternative proteins.
The sustainable biotechnology collaboration will utilize proprietary technology to convert stillage — a natural byproduct of whiskey production — into functional proteins for aquaculture, pet food, and organic fertilizer applications. In turn, this creates a closed-loop system that enhances the bourbon industry’s environmental sustainability.
The project is expected to generate 35 high-tech jobs while positioning Kentucky as a leader in circular bioeconomy solutions. This initiative may attract attention from multiple stakeholder groups, including environmental advocates, the alternative protein sector, proponents of local economic development, bourbon enthusiasts and individuals who are conscious of their consumption habits.
