The opening of Biidaasige Park on Toronto’s newly created Ookwemin Minising island represents a transformative milestone in urban development and environmental stewardship. As the largest new park in the city in decades, this 20-hectare green space forms the centerpiece of a $1.4 billion flood protection and waterfront revitalization initiative funded jointly by federal, provincial, and municipal governments. The project has fundamentally reshaped Toronto’s eastern waterfront by creating a naturalized mouth for the Don River while establishing critical flood protection for 174 hectares of land.
Beyond its infrastructure significance, Biidaasige Park offers diverse recreational amenities including ziplines, waterplay features, ecological wetlands, and culturally significant Indigenous design elements, all while serving as the foundation for future sustainable community development that will eventually include thousands of housing units and employment opportunities.
