Continental’s Automotive division has developed a sustainable car key fob with an outer shell made entirely from bioplastic instead of traditional fossil-based materials. This innovation stems from the company’s 2021 “design for environment” initiative, which focuses on finding eco-friendly alternatives in production.
The new casing is made from PA11, a 100% bio-based plastic derived from castor oil. Unlike standard plastics, PA11 comes from renewable resources, is fully recyclable, and meets strict sustainability standards. The castor plants used to produce it can grow in dry, arid soil without extra irrigation or harming the environment, making it a low-impact, renewable option.
By replacing conventional PA12 with PA11, Continental is taking another step toward offering more environmentally conscious automotive solutions while reducing reliance on fossil-based plastics.
