Clean the Sky – Local Composting Initiatives

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

A new local composting initiative at South School is helping reduce landfill waste while teaching students valuable lessons in environmental responsibility. In partnership with Planet New Canaan, the school has launched a composting program funded through the end of the academic year by the Anderson Fund and local donations. This hands-on effort focuses on collecting compostable items like food scraps, paper napkins, and biodegradable lunchware to be transformed into nutrient-rich soil.

Since its launch in March, the initiative has already diverted substantial waste from landfills. In the first week, students and staff collected ten bins of compostables and another ten filled with recyclable plastics. This dual focus on composting and recycling supports broader sustainability goals while reintroducing waste reduction habits paused during the pandemic.

The program also highlights the value of community engagement, with parents volunteering in the cafeteria to support students as they learn the new system. With South School setting the example, other New Canaan schools may soon adopt greener lunchroom practices.
