Clean the Sky – Distributed Renewable Energy Platforms

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

PowerGen Renewable Energy has partnered with leading international investors—including the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), the Danish Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), EDFI Management Company through its ElectriFi initiative, and the African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA)—to establish a scalable platform for distributed renewable energy across sub-Saharan Africa. The collaboration aims to deploy a 120 MW portfolio of mini-grids, metro-grids, commercial and industrial power solutions, and battery energy storage systems, initially focusing on projects in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This initiative builds on PowerGen’s more than 13 years of experience developing, implementing, and operating off-grid and grid-connected renewable projects across the continent.

The platform reached its first financial close in January 2025, anchored by PIDG’s InfraCo investment and concessional capital from PIDG Technical Assistance, with SEFA providing catalytic finance to unlock further private-sector funding. PowerGen’s status as a private-sector partner in Power Africa has supplied technical assistance and leveraged past funding streams for ElectriFi and SEFA, positioning the platform to catalyze additional equity and debt financing through 2025. By adopting a unified platform approach that engages local developers and engineering-procurement-construction partners, the initiative has potential to accelerate electrification efforts for the approximately 570 million people in sub-Saharan Africa who currently lack access to electricity.
