Nippon Life Launches the ‘Nippon Life Nature Finance Approach,’ a corporate impact framework designed to measure how business activities contribute to ecosystem restoration. Part of the insurer’s broader sustainability strategy, the initiative supports its goal of ‘Passing on indispensable Earth to the future.’
Developed with sustainability consultancy ERM Japan, the approach incorporates ‘Biosphere Integrity’ principles from the Planetary Boundaries model, focusing on metrics such as net primary production, human appropriation of plant energy, and species population data. These indicators aim to integrate nature-related considerations into both operational and investment decisions.
The framework also applies a ‘do no significant harm’ principle to avoid negative environmental or social outcomes. Nippon Life plans to refine its metrics in line with evolving global nature-finance discussions, positioning itself as a leader in biodiversity-driven investment strategies.
