The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is preparing to implement a significant sustainability initiative by transitioning its Nandini milk brand packaging from conventional polythene to biodegradable, eco-friendly alternatives—a first-of-its-kind move in India’s dairy sector.

Developed using derivatives from corn and sugarcane, the new packaging is designed to break down completely within 90 days when disposed of in soil, offering a substantial improvement over traditional polythene, which can take years to decompose.

The pilot phase of this initiative will be spearheaded by the Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (BAMUL) and is set to roll out in Bengaluru later this month, with a phased expansion planned across Karnataka in the coming months. This shift to biodegradable packaging is expected to significantly reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste generated by milk packaging, reinforcing KMF’s commitment to sustainable practices and innovation in the dairy industry.
