Chilling moment businessman asks police ‘how many years do you think I’ll get?’ after stabbing estranged wife to death then calmly smoking a cigarette

This is the moment a jealous husband casually asks police, ‘How many years do you think I’ll get’ after stabbing his estranged wife to death.

Businessman Gavin Shaw, 61, murdered Michele Kennedy, 55, after discovering she’d spent the weekend with a new lover who she’d met on holiday in Turkey.

Ring doorbell footage captured Shaw letting himself into the couple’s former marital home, in Warrington, Cheshire, before Ms Kennedy staggered out less than three minutes later.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that, in that time Shaw, who worked for his son’s tiling firm, stabbed his wife of 12 years twice in the stomach with a kitchen knife.

She collapsed bleeding on the pavement with serious injuries but, as relatives and passers-by desperately tried to save her, Shaw simply lit a cigarette and sat down in the garden.

The court heard that, when police arrived and handcuffed Shaw, he appeared unfazed, telling an officer: ‘That’s what you get when she’s s*****g someone.’

He later asked police: ‘How many years do you think I’ll get? 10?, before adding: ‘I don’t do things by halves. Will I get fed tonight?’

Ms Kennedy died five days later in hospital.

Today Shaw was jailed for life and ordered to spend a minimum of 15 years in jail before being eligible for parole.

Judge Brian Cummings KC told Shaw: ‘Your actions were motivated by jealousy and resentment at her moving on with another man and spending the weekend with him, when this was no business of yours.

‘You entered her house, not with the intention of a friendly chat, but enflamed by jealousy and resentment, wanting at the very least to shout abuse at her.

‘Approaching her that way was never likely to end well.

‘I reject the suggestion you have shown any genuine remorse. You have tried to pass the blame onto your victim and your presentation throughout was callous and indifferent.’

The court heard that Shaw and Ms Kennedy had been married for 12 years but separated last summer.

Relatives told detectives their relationship was ‘toxic and volatile’ and that they argued over Shaw’s heavy drinking.

Andrew Ford KC, prosecuting, said that, in the weeks before the stabbing, on October 12 last year, Ms Kennedy had developed ‘a new lease of life’ and was starting a new chapter.

She booked a holiday to Marmaris with her mother and, while she was away, she met and fell in love with another Brit, Gordon Riddick, who lived in Glasgow.

The pair were ‘inseparable’ and, on their return from Turkey, continued to meet up, even spending the weekend before Ms Kennedy’s murder together.

But Shaw found out about the romance and, on the day of the attack, sent a text message to Ms Kennedy’s son and mother saying: ‘Never thought she was a s**g!’ with several vomiting emojis.

He also told a friend: ‘She’s had a good weekend s******g in Manchester.’

The court heard that Shaw went drinking with his son, Adam, after work on October 12 and left after having ‘several pints’ to go to the cash point.

Just before 4pm he was captured on CCTV entering his former home address, on Manchester Rd, Warrington, where Ms Kennedy still lived, before emerging just three minutes later.

Inquiries revealed Ms Kennedy had been sending heart emoji texts to Mr Riddick just 42 seconds before Shaw arrived and stabbed her.

Mr Ford said: ‘It is the prosecution’s case that, while inside for those three minutes, Gavin Shaw murdered Michele Kennedy by stabbing her in the chest twice with a kitchen knife.

‘There is limited evidence of what happened at the scene. Her handset was found submerged in water in the kitchen sink.

‘The defendant had not visited pre-armed with the knife, not with any weapon. (But) once inside the address, he took up the knife from a set of kitchen knives. They were bought for her as a gift from her mother.

‘The footage captures Michele Kennedy emerge first. She is followed immediately by the defendant, but they are separate. There is no struggle nor commotion.

‘She got to the end of her garden path, turned right down Manchester Road and slumped to the pavement.’

Two workmen who saw Ms Kennedy on the floor stopped their van to try to help and dialled 999.

One said Shaw did not seem bothered by Ms Kennedy’s plight and described feeling ‘scared at the extent of Shaw’s despondency.’

Shaw, who had ‘blood on his hands, went to his son Adam’s house nearby and told his daughter-in-law, Hayley Higgins: ‘I’ve stabbed Michele. You need to go and help her.’

Ms Higgins, who also heard Shaw shouting that Ms Kennedy was a ‘slag,’ held Ms Kennedy’s hand and tried to comfort her.

Although she was pale and falling in and out of consciousness, Ms Higgins said she managed to tell her: ‘He stabbed me.’

Shaw, who was estimated to be twice the drink driving limit, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and, in a prepared statement during questioning, told officers: ‘I’m devastated at what has happened. I didn’t intend to kill Michele. ‘Everything happened very quickly. I felt emotionally overwhelmed and in shock.

‘I didn’t make any conscious decision. It was a reaction in the heat of the moment. It felt like I snapped. I just grabbed the kitchen knife from the side in the kitchen. I’m in complete shock.’

When informed later of his ex-wife’s death, he started crying and told prison staff at HMP Altcourse: ‘It should never have got that far. I’d been screaming at her because she’d been on her back getting s***ged in Manchester.’

The court heard that Shaw also told a prison nurse that he suspected his wife’s feelings towards him had changed because she wouldn’t hold his hand in public.

He claimed that when he confronted her about the holiday romance she denied sleeping with another man and he stabbed her during a scuffle.

Following Ms Kennedy’s murder, her mother Patricia Lawton said her daughter was ‘turning her life around’ after ‘so many struggles.’

‘The death of Michele has broken my heart,’ Mrs Lawton said.

‘We had a close relationship, even closer in Turkey and she had made plans for a future away from Gavin.

‘I have fond memories of that holiday, she was happy and relaxed. It was lovely to see this after so many struggles, a glimpse of her new life.

‘She was turning her life around, a job she liked, money in the bank, not having to deal with the relationship, people who loved her and wanted the best for her. This was all taken from us. She wanted to be free – but she wasn’t.’

Detective Inspector Eleanor Atkinson, of Cheshire Police, said: ‘This was an exceptionally traumatic incident for all those involved, especially Michele’s family, neighbours and the emergency services who tried to help her following the attack.

‘While nothing can ever be done to bring her back, I do hope that the conclusion of this case will bring her family some closure.’
