Canadians are taking a stand against Donald Trump by renaming the classic Americano coffee in an effort to promote national pride.
Cafes around the nation have switched the standard ‘Americano’ title for a ‘Canadiano’ in a trend which is gaining momentum.
It comes after months of hostility from Trump upon his return to the White House. He has repeatedly expressed interest in annexing Canada as America’s 51st state – a move which has infuriated patriotic Canadians.
Kicking Horse Coffee started the new movement recently, despite selling ‘Canadianos’ for 16 years.
The cafe in British Columbia shared a post to Instagram, which has since been deleted after facing backlash, which read: ‘We’re officially making it a thing and asking coffee shops across the country to make the switch.’
Several other cafes around the nation saw the idea and fell into line.
William Olivera, who owns Cafe Belém in Toronto, said his decision to adopt the new name in his store was less political and more about displaying national pride.
‘It’s good for us to just, you know, stand up for being ourselves and reminding other people … that we’re not to be pushed around and bullied by others,’ he told the Washington Post.

After adopting the new name two weeks ago, he has no immediate plans to revert back.
Social media has been alight with delighted Canadians noticing the changes in cafes across the nation.
Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor shared a photo of a cafe menu on X, writing: ‘Dropped in to Black Creek Coffee in G’town for some java & had to order the new Canadiano! (Love the menu switch).’
Another delighted customer in a different cafe in Ottowa said: ‘It’s really happening! Canadian cafes are replacing the Americano with ‘Canadiano.’ Today in #Ottawa.’
‘Canadians, I adore you! This change was a symbolic protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada,’ another wrote.
Todd Simpson, who owns Morning Owl cafe in Ottowa, told CTV news it is a small change which can ‘make light of a serious situation.’
‘We don’t need any American products right now. It seems like a really good way to say we’re Canadian.’

While coffee does not grow in Canada, Trudeau’s message has struck a nerve with patriotic locals.
It comes after Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The updated name appeared on Google Maps for app users in the US earlier this month, following Trump’s executive order to rename the body of water.
Outside of the US, all users will see both names – including those living in Mexico.
The tit-for-tat has been escalating for weeks.
Canadians recently noticed some provincial parks have recently been mislabeled as ‘state’ parks on Google maps.
Speaking to CTV news, resident Rachel Deren said: ‘I would like to draw attention to this disgusting display of American oppression of Canadian culture and autonomy.
‘This alarming revelation has stirred many who have noticed, as it is an attack on our Canadian identity.’

Mount Robson Park, Whaleboat Island Marine Provincial Park and Pinecone Burke Provincial Park are among a handful of parks in Canada that go by ‘state park’ on Google maps.
This is despite being almost exclusively referred to as ‘provincial’ parks within Canada, while ‘state’ parks are considered an Americanized term.
‘We are proud to be Canadian and will remain so despite attempts like this from our ever increasingly hostile neighbours to the south,’ Deren said.
Trump has repeatedly trolled Trudeau about his desire to make Canada a state, insisting it is also the will of the Canadian public and referring to him as a ‘governor.’
Canada is a country of roughly forty million people broken down into ten provinces and three territories.
If it were to become one massive state as Trump has been calling for, it would become the most populous state alongside California.
Trudeau has repeatedly hit back at the suggestion and maintains it will ‘never happen.’
‘Canadians define themselves a whole bunch of different ways, but one of the ways that we all use as shorthand is ‘we’re Canadian because we’re not American,” Trudeau said during a visit to Washington, DC.

Trump’s plan has divided the neighboring nations, as seen during a recent hockey match between the United States and Canada.
Canadian fans booed the American national anthem in Montreal during the tournament and American fans returned the favor during ‘O Canada’ at the 4 Nations Face-Off final in Boston, which itself was altered by a Canadian singer as a form of protest against Trump.
After Connor McDavid scored the game-winning overtime goal, Trudeau issued a defiant message to Trump and the United States: ‘You can’t take our country and you can’t take our game’ in English and in Quebecois French.
While some congratulated Trudeau on Canada’s victory, many slammed the prime minister for his response.
‘You won a hockey game. You lost your country.’
