Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter talks about Job search branding for blue-collar workers.

Why Your Interview Skills Suck

Hi, this is Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome to No BS Job Search Advice Radio. Branding is of critical importance to every person professionally. Why do I say that? Well, you may take the short sighted view that branding is not going to help you in your job search.

But I take the long view. And that is you’re going to have a lengthy career, even if you’re 55, you’re going to have a career. Even if you’re 60 or 62 or 65, your career is probably going to go on longer than you thought.

And you want to have a brand that makes you attractive to people. Now, on this show, I spent some time talking about branding specifically for blue collar and no collar workers. But some of the lessons are applicable to everyone.

So I hope you find this show helpful. And if you do, I want you to do two things. Two things.

Yes, two things. First of all, I want you to connect with me on LinkedIn at LinkedIn.com forward slash IN forward slash TheBigGameHunter. And the second thing is, if you’re job hunting, join me at JobSearch.Community. I want to be able to help you.

The shows only come out one a day, even if you listen to a couple of weeks. Trust me, so many situations won’t be spoken to that you’ll find helpful if you join the site. So, again, join me at JobSearch.Community. Now, with that, come join me on the show.

I’m going to speak about branding. And although the video is really targeted toward a blue collar worker, many of the same points I believe are true if you’re a white collar worker, as well. So, hear me out.

The Importance of Branding

Try and follow the advice I give you. It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time, but you want to evolve this in ways that are useful to you, not just simply in this job search so that everything is available to you for future job searches, as well. Now, the first thing I’m going to mention is you need to spend some time trying to figure out what makes you special, what makes you unique, what makes you different than other people who do your kind of work for the firm that you’re doing.

How do you stand out from the pack? So, that’s point number one. Point number two is, when you look at your online persona, keep the critical comments and the snarky remarks and the bad pictures, you know, off of your profiles. Firms are going online to look for what they can find out about people.

You don’t want this standing in their way. Third thing is, if a recruiter was trying to find you, whether that was a corporate recruiter or a third party recruiter, think like them and provide this sort of keywords in your LinkedIn profile and in other places that will allow them to find you. If you’re blogging, make sure that the SEO for your blog mentions the appropriate keywords.

Here’s a fourth point and I think it’s probably the biggest one. Start to chronicle your work life with video, with pictures, with things that show you in a great light. Now, there’s an interesting website and they have a beta of this app that I’m working with.

The site is called Somewhere and you can use their app once they allow you to sign up. It’s currently in beta. I’m sure it’ll come out of beta fairly soon.

But what they allow you to do is to chronicle your professional life with a picture and with your description and people are curious. I’m finding people, other than those who work for the firm, of course, are starting to follow me regularly and you’ll find that if you start to chronicle yourself professionally with photos and with video, putting them up on LinkedIn, putting them up on Somewhere, putting them up on Facebook and Twitter and other places, you’re going to start laying the foundation so that, maybe not in this job search but in future ones, people will start to look out for you and start to look for you and you’ll have established a brand where you’re known as someone who’s a success within your field. So, that’s today’s show.

I hope you found it helpful. And if you did, come join me at JobSearchCoachingHQ.com. I have a ton more there that you can watch, listen to or read to help you find work more quickly. And don’t forget, five stars in iTunes, please! Five stars in iTunes, please! Hope you have a great day.
