Australian Cooper Woods stuns the world to win gold in men’s moguls at Winter Olympics

Aussie Cooper Woods has stunned the world by coming from nowhere to win gold in the men’s moguls at the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Woods came up with a flawless final run to score of 83.71, tying Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury.

But the Aussie was awarded the gold medal outright because he had a higher score on his turns — 48.40 compared to Kingsbury’s 47.70.

Woods, from Pambula on the NSW South Coast, told Channel 9 he was stunned to have claimed the ultimate prize.

‘I am Cooper Woods and I’m an Olympic champion. C’mon,’ Woods said.

‘I have no words. The highs, the lows, the injuries and the setbacks, all that sacrifice has been for this little thing.

‘I was really nervous at the top. I felt pretty lost after qualifiers. It’s just been crazy what has actually happened in the last couple of days.’

The 25-year-old becomes the seventh Aussie to win a Winter Olympics gold medal, alongside Steven Bradbury, Alisa Camplin, Torah Bright, Lydia Lassila, Dale Begg-Smith and Jakara Anthony.

Woods become Australia’s third gold medallist in the moguls after Dale Begg-Smith win the event in Turin in 2006, while Jakara Anthony rose to the top in Beijing four years ago.

Lassila said on Channel 9: ‘Cooper Woods has dethroned the king of mogul skiing.

‘He scored the same as Mikael and he had no separation within his legs. There was no bobbles. There was no mistakes in this run.’

Soon after winning, Woods was mobbed by Matt Graham, the silver medallist at the 2022 Olympics, who finished fifth behind his Aussie teammate.

Woods said he only had one drink to celebrate because he has to compete again at the Games and is training tomorrow.

Jessica Fox, a three-time gold medal winner at the Summer Olympics, was on ahnd to award Woods with his prize.

‘It was an amazing honour to receive my gold medal from a fellow champion,’ Woods said.

‘She’s an Aussie icon – so lovely, but it threw me off guard, she was very emotional handing me the medal and it brought a lot of significance to that moment.

‘She started tearing up a little bit, and I was just, ‘Oh my god, is this Jess Fox!’, that was so cool.

On duty before the Games as a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Fox has been spending time with the Australian team in Livigno.
