At least one dead after active shooter opened fire at Old Dominion University in Virginia

A suspected gunman has been killed and two victims injured after a shooter opened fire at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 11am Thursday at the campus in Norfolk.

Officials said the person who was killed was the shooter, and the two others injured in the attack were taken to a local hospital. The victims were in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

The identities of the victims and shooter have not been released, and it is unclear how the suspect was killed.

The campus has been placed under lockdown and university operations were suspended for the rest of the day.

A sophomore at the university, Logan Hayes, told WAVY that students were in a campus building taking a test when gunshots were heard.

‘I heard about a multitude of gunshots go off and people just screaming,’ he said.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as information is confirmed.

The Old Dominion campus has around 24,000 students, and is located less than 5 miles from Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval station in the world which serves as the US Navy’s Atlantic Fleet headquarters.

Officials urged students and the public near the campus to avoid the area around Constant Hall, where a large police presence was seen.

The university said in an alert to students: ‘Active threat reported at Constant Hall. Follow Run-Hide-Fight protocols. Emergency personnel responding. Avoid area.’

University police, Norfolk police and emergency personnel responded immediately to the incident, the university said. ATF special agents have also responded, officials told CNN.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger said in an X post that state support was ‘being mobilized’ to assist the university.

‘I have spoken with university leadership. My administration remains in close contact with local emergency responders,’ Spanberger said.
