As is often the case, job hunters are asking the wrong question.
“Stupid Salary Negotiation Mistakes: Being Too Grateful”
I need a job. Are employment agencies legit? Um, ‘legit’s the wrong word. Competent is a better word.
Now, even with competent agencies, don’t work for you. They work for an employer who pays them to find someone to fill a job. Job hunters think that, you know, ‘I sent my resume to that recruiter. They didn’t get back to me. What’s wrong with them?’ And the answer comes down to you didn’t make a case for why you were qualified. So, are they legitimate? Yes, but they don’t work for you. You’re not paying them anything. They’re not there to find you a job, after all. You’re not paying them to do that. And even if you did, you can’t afford to pay them as much as an employer does.
So, the long and the short of it is, from your vantage point, they may not look legit because they’re not getting in touch with you. But they are legit. It’s just you’re not qualified for anything that they’re looking for. Why should they get in touch with you? It’s a waste of their time. So remember, remember, you know, recruiters work for employers. Once you understand that, then it makes a lot more sense why recruiters ghost.
You’re stealing their time. You’re going to get into an argument why they should work for you, and they don’t. They work for an employer. They’re not there to find you a job. They’re there to fill a job
