The partnership between SMILE Mass and Volunteer Ventures represents a meaningful expansion of accessibility infrastructure across Massachusetts. By combining SMILE Mass’s established expertise in adaptive recreation equipment with Volunteer Ventures’ intergenerational volunteer model, this collaboration introduces universally designed picnic tables that fundamentally rethink traditional outdoor furniture and inclusive community gathering spaces.

The innovative outdoor furniture design feature integrates wheelchair spaces at the table’s center rather than the periphery. This is intended to symbolically and functionally position individuals with mobility challenges as equal participants in social interactions.

The accessibility infrastructure project with Volunteer Ventures builds upon SMILE Mass’s existing Floating Beach Wheelchair Program that has distributed over 180 aquatic mobility devices. Now, the organization is expanding its impact to schools, parks, and retirement communities through furniture that promotes both physical access and social inclusion.
