Your C-Suite future depends on recognizing these hidden dangers. There are clues during the hiring process that signal a nightmare job waiting for you, even at the executive level.

 

Your success in the C-suite often depends on spotting the warning signs that firms give during their interview process and in your background checking so that you don’t step into crap because ultimately, the environment will win and grind you down.

Red flags like disorganized interviews, long delays between steps particularly without communicating the reasons why, misaligned stakeholder expectations, evasive answers about turnover, visible tension amongst the leaders that are not going to get better when you’re inside. At the executive level, cultural dysfunction is your problem to solve, but only if you’re empowered to fix it.

So, we know every company has an issue; that’s why you’re coming on board. Some people are hired specifically to fix the dysfunction, and if you’re coming in as a change agent or a turnaround specialist, those signs may be proof that you’re needed. But be sure the board and the other people in the C-suite, particularly the CEO, are aligned with the need to change; otherwise, you’re going to wind up as the scapegoat and not as the solution.
