A Script for a Networking Email

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I was listening to a podcast interview with Tom Madera about cold networking that works on the LHH podcast, “Yeah, It Happened. What’s Next.” I thought it had terrific advice to how to reach out to someone at a firm you are interested in interviewing with or working for.

Adapt!

Here’s a great script for a networking email that you can use on LinkedIn, or a text, or what have you. I’ll reference the podcast I was listening to that shared it in the show notes.

“I’m really interested in [fill in the blank name of the company], but before I do anything formal, I have some questions I would love to ask you. Would you be kind enough to give me 15 minutes to answer them? Thanks, I hope to speak with you soon.”

You’re not asking for a job. You’re not asking for an interview. You’re asking for some time. And what that allows them to do is to give you 15 stinking minutes that often winds up lasting longer. And will this work every time? Of course not. Will it work more often than, “Hi, can I get some time with you? I’ve got some questions”? It’s a more polite way of doing exactly that.
