2013 was a great year for movies. Gravity starring Sandra Bullock pushed the limits of what sci-fi looked like in the 21st century, Iron Man 3 gave comic book fans their first look at a troubled post-Avengers Tony Stark, and Elsa sang “Let it Go” for the first time ever in Disney’s Frozen.
However, one movie that I think has largely been forgotten over the years is Homefront, a fairly straightforward action film starring Jason Statham that flopped pretty hard at the box office when it was released in 2013, making just over $20 million and peaking at number 5 during its release weekend. However, it looks like this action movie has found a new life on Netflix, rocketing to the top of the streaming service’s movie chart this week, landing just under the newly-released How to Train Your Dragon live action movie for the film’s first second-place finish.
What is Homefront about?
A typical 2010s action movie with some big names attached to it
Homelander is an action film directed by Gary Fleder who is primarily a TV director with episodes of The Shield, Homicide: Life on the Streets and Tales from the Crypt among his credits. However, even if you’re not immediately familiar with the director, writer Sylvester Stallone almost certainly rings a bell. Though Stallone doesn’t star in the film, he did help produce it in addition to writing the script, which is based on a novel of the same name by Chuck Logan.
The movie stars Transporter star Jason Statham as Phil Broker, a retired DEA agent who is trying to lead a quiet life with his daughter but unfortunately finds himself entangled with Gator Bodine, a crime boss, following a school bullying incident. James Franco, Winona Ryder, and Kate Bosworth round out the cast.
Where can I stream Homefront?
Netflix isn’t your only option
Though Homefront is proving to be very popular on Netflix, the film can be streamed on other plaforms as well. Most notably, folks on a budget wanting to check this movie out for free without a subscription can do so on Sling TV (via Shout TV). Homefront can also be rented or purchased from digital storefronts including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at home.
