The Fire Stick replacement you’ve been waiting for could be launching soon

I’ve always liked Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks, but I have to admit there are some very compelling alternatives out there that make switching platforms extremely tempting. One device in particular that springs to mind is the Onn 4K Pro.

If you’re not familiar with it, the Onn 4K Pro is a Google TV streaming device sold exclusively at Walmart. It’s become incredibly popular for a few key reasons. For starters, it’s priced at $45 — $15 less than the Fire TV Stick 4K Max — and packs 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, and supports both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. On top of that, it runs Google TV, giving you the freedom to customize your experience with custom launchers and sideload any apps you want.

The only real downside? It’s almost always out of stock, which isn’t too surprising given how strong its value proposition is compared to the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Luckily, though, this stock issue might not last much longer, as a highly anticipated successor could be coming soon.

Back in February, we got our first look at the new Onn 4K Pro coming soon via an FCC listing and learned a few of its specs, including that it once again has 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi 6. But now, thanks to newly surfaced images, we are getting an even better look at the upcoming Onn 4K Pro.

The new Onn 4K Pro closely resembles another Google TV device

There are still two big unknowns about it

As you can see in the images above that popped up on Reddit (via 9to5Google), the new Onn 4K Pro bears a striking resemblance to the Google TV Streamer.

The current Onn 4K Pro has a more rounded square shape, while this new model appears to mimic the elongated design of the Google TV Streamer. Honestly, I don’t mind this at all, as I really like the design of the Google TV Streamer. The only real downside is that it will probably take up a bit more space on TV stands than the current version, but I think that’s a trade-off most people will be happy to make.

These leaked images also give us a good look at the port selection, and it seems that the new Onn 4K Pro will once again come with a USB port and an Ethernet port. It’s not clear what the specifications of these ports will be, but I would really like to see it equipped with Gigabit Ethernet, like the Google TV Streamer, rather than a slow 10/100 Ethernet port, which many smart TVs are limited to.

As for the chipset powering the new Onn 4K Pro, that part isn’t entirely clear yet. But there is speculation it could use the Amlogic S905X5M, a quad-core chip clocked at 2.5 GHz (via Android TV Guide). That would make a lot of sense, especially since Walmart’s newer Onn 4K Plus already uses it. If that turns out to be the case, it would mark a modest upgrade over the current Onn 4K Pro, which runs on the Amlogic S905X4, a quad-core chip clocked at 2.0 GHz.

The biggest unknowns right now are the price and launch date. Walmart recently bumped the price of the Onn 4K Plus from $30 to $40, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the new Onn 4K Pro get a similar increase. The current model sits at $45, so a jump to around $55 seems likely — and even then, it would still undercut the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. But that pricing is simply speculation on my part.

As for when it’ll launch, that’s still up in the air. But with an FCC listing already out there and more images leaking, it probably won’t be long before it shows up on store shelves.
