Cultivate Your Onlyness to Win

In 2024, a mid-career product lead named Sarah found herself in the middle of a “standard” tech layoff. Her LinkedIn profile looked like a carbon copy of ten thousand others: “Results-driven leader,” “Cross-functional collaborator,” “User-centric.” She spent two months applying to Director-level roles and got zero traction. The market saw her as a commodity.

Instead of doubling down on applications, Sarah shifted to cultivating her Onlyness. She realized her unique intersection wasn’t just “product management”—it was the fact that she had spent five years in high-frequency trading before moving into consumer fintech. She began writing exclusively about “The Latency of Trust,” applying high-frequency data principles to how users interact with banking apps. Within three weeks, a CEO from a Tier-1 digital bank reached out to her directly. He didn’t want a “Product Director”; he wanted the only person who understood the technical bridge between sub-millisecond data and consumer psychology. Sarah didn’t just find a job; she bypassed the entire competitive field.

Cultivating your Onlyness is the only sustainable strategy in an AI-saturated market. If you are comparable, you are replaceable. Here is how to build that distinction without the fluff.

1. Identify the Non-Obvious Intersection

Onlyness is not a single skill; it is the friction between two or more disparate experiences. Most professionals try to hide their “zig-zag” career paths to look more “consistent.” This is a mistake. Consistency is for commodities.

  • The Audit: Look at your history. Find the industry, hobby, or technical discipline that seems “irrelevant” to your current role.

  • The Formula: (Primary Professional Skill) + (Secondary Niche Expertise) + (Specific Market Problem).

  • The Reality: If you are a Marketing Director, you are one of 500,000. If you are a Marketing Director who understands the specific regulatory constraints of the 2026 Decentralized Finance (DeFi) space, you are one of ten.

2. The LinkedIn Signal: From Generalist to Specialist

Your LinkedIn feed is currently a graveyard of “congratulations” and generic industry news. To cultivate Onlyness, your profile must function as a narrow-band signal.

  • The Headline Shift: Delete the “Open to Work” banner and the generic titles. Your headline should state the specific problem you solve that no one else can.

  • The Content Protocol: Stop sharing “Top 10 AI Tools” lists. Instead, pick a specific, high-stakes problem in your niche and provide a “High-Resolution” solution.

  • The Rule of Specificity: If your post could be written by a generic LLM, do not post it. Onlyness thrives on the “dirty” details—the failures, the edge cases, and the nuanced “insider” observations that a bot hasn’t been trained on yet.

3. Build a “Proof-of-Concept” Garden

LinkedIn is for reach, but your Onlyness needs a “home” where the depth of your thinking is undeniable. This is where you cultivate your distinction elsewhere.

  • The Micro-Blog/Substack: You don’t need a massive newsletter; you need a searchable archive of your expertise. When a recruiter or peer Googles you, they should find 5-10 deep-dives into your specific intersection.

  • The Semantic Trail: Ensure your name is associated with specific technical terms or methodologies. If you “own” a specific framework—even a small one—you become the primary source for that solution.

  • The Value: When you send a networking message, you aren’t sending a resume; you are sending a link to a thought-leadership piece that proves you are the only one standing in your specific spot.

4. The Anti-Networking Approach

Once your Onlyness is visible, traditional networking becomes obsolete. You no longer ask for “15 minutes to pick your brain.” Instead, you engage in Inquiry-Based Outreach.

  • The Move: Find the top 10 people in your target niche. Engage with their work by adding a layer of your Onlyness to their conversation.

  • The Script: “Your point on [X] was solid. However, from my perspective in [Your Niche Intersection], I’ve seen [Unique Data Point] suggest a different outcome. I’ve documented how we handled this here [Link].”

  • The Result: You aren’t a seeker; you are a peer. You are training the market to see you as the go-to person for that specific intersection.

The Bottom Line

Cultivating Onlyness is a move from Volume to Value. It requires the courage to be “unappealing” to 95% of the market so that you are “irresistible” to the 5% that actually matters.

The machine can simulate your resume, but it cannot simulate your specific perspective. If you are still trying to fit in, you are voluntarily competing with an algorithm that is faster, cheaper, and more consistent than you.

Stop being the “best” candidate and start being the only one.
