The new science fiction film, Project Hail Mary, adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, has made an impressive box office; earning $140.9 million worldwide over the first weekend. It thus becomes Amazon MGM’s biggest debut to date, and the biggest of the year so far.
The film stars Ryan Gosling in the role of Ryland Grace, who has has woken up on a last-chance mission to save humanity. The only issue is, he cannot remember a thing. As his hazy memory begins to return, and the sheer magnitude of his task begins to dawn on him.
Project Hail Mary currently boasts an admirable score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 95% critics score and 96% audience rating, with Ryan Gosling getting a lot of praise for his charm and humour (no surprises there).
As an adaptation of an already-beloved book, the reaction of the readers is always worth looking out for; and the movie has been widely acknowledged to have done the book justice.
If you’re wondering whether reading the book first is necessary, fans are suggesting that, given the well-aligned nature of the two, either order is fine, so take your chance to see it in the cinemas while you can! You can watch the trailer here:
