A young woman was allegedly stabbed at a south-east Melbourne shopping centre while walking to work.

The 25-year-old was allegedly attacked by a 16-year-old boy at M-City Shopping Centre on Blackburn Road, in Clayton, at about 7.50am on Thursday.

A passer-by offered assistance to the woman until emergency services arrived.

The 16-year-old boy fled the scene before he was taken into custody at a nearby medical centre.
