Man arrested for murder of mob boss and innocent veterinarian after 9 years on the run

A Canadian career criminal who is wanted in connection to the murders of a mob boss and a veterinary technician has been arrested after he was on the run for nine years.

Daniel Tomassetti, 35, was arrested in Mexico in August, and Canadian authorities are seeking his extradition.

He is wanted for two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and three counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

The charges stem from the separate targeted killings in 2017 of Mila Barberi, a 28-year-old veterinary technician from Toronto, and Angelo Musitano, an infamous Ontario mob boss.

On May 2 of that year, Musitano was shot at close range while he was sitting in his pickup truck in the driveway of his home in Hamilton, which is just outside of Toronto.

The gunman had been waiting nearby and ran up to the vehicle’s window before firing at the mobster.

Just a few weeks later, Musitano’s brother and fellow mob boss, Pasquale Musitano, was also shot at but lived. His luck ran out in 2020, when he was fatally shot in front of a furniture store in Burlington, Ontario.

Authorities have not charged Tomassetti with either the attempted or successful hits on Pasquale.

On March 14, 2017, Barberi was gunned down while standing next to an SUV parked outside of a store in Vaughan, which is also near Toronto.

She was waiting to pick up her boyfriend, Saverio Serrano, who authorities believe had connections to organized crime and was the intended target of the hit. He was injured in the shooting but did not die.

A surveillance camera in the parking lot captured the assailant running up to the vehicle and firing shots into it before realizing his target was not in the car.

He then ran around the back of the SUV and fired additional rounds at Barberi and Serrano. The veterinary technician and the mob boss are believed to have been killed by the same gunman.

Tomassetti was not the one who pulled the trigger, but he facilitated the killings, according to police.

He was under surveillance following the murders, but in January 2018, Tomassetti managed to flee to Mexico where he was known to have connections.

Court records indicate that the wanted man dodged authorities by leaving his phone at home when he went to the airport. He had booked a round trip but was not on the return flight a few days later.

Two other men were also wanted in relation to Musitano and Barberi’s killings, but they were both found dead in the near-decade since the murders were committed.

One of the men was Michael Cudmore, 39, who is believed to have been the shooter in both hits. His body was found in an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road in rural Mexico in 2020.

The other man was Daniele Ranieri, 34, a mob enforcer and criminal mentor to Cudmore. He was found dead in a ditch in Mexico in 2018. He had been tied up and executed.

Because of the grim fate of his alleged co-conspirators, it was believed that Tomassetti may have also been killed.

But authorities did not give up the search for him. In 2023, Tomassetti was named one of Canada’s 25 most wanted fugitives and placed on the BOLO (be on the lookout) list.

There was a $50,000 reward for anyone with information that would lead to Tomassetti’s arrest. Police have not confirmed whether the reward was claimed.

Police also have not revealed how Tomassetti was found and arrested by Mexican authorities.

A spokesperson for York Regional Police told Canadian outlet the National Post that Tomassetti is contesting his extradition.
