Teenagers killed in tragic accident on popular Sunshine Coast hiking track identified

Two teenagers who died following a hiking accident on the Sunshine Coast have been identified by their heartbroken families.

Emergency services rushed to Mount Beerwah on Sunday morning following reports that people had fallen between 50 and 100m.

An 18-year-old Brisbane woman, identified only as Lorielle Georgina, died at the scene.

Jack Thatcher, 18, was in critical condition after the fall and taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital but tragically died there on Wednesday.

‘Jack was injured while simply enjoying his life in the great outdoors with his friends,’ one family friend wrote on a GoFundMe page.

‘Jack’s spirit, his sense of adventure and the joy he brought to others is being felt so strongly through the stories, messages and memories being shared.’

The campaign, which has raised $62,500 so far, will help ease the financial pressure on Mr Thatcher’s family while they grieve.

In a separate GoFundMe page, which has raised $57,900, the family of Lorielle shared her last hand-painted artwork, a graphic of a rose, and a photo of the teenager with her twin sister.

Lorielle’s sister was the girlfriend of Mr Thatcher and was with the hiking group and rescued during the incident without injury, ABC News reports.

‘No words can describe the loss of a loved one,’ the organiser wrote in an update to the fundraiser.

‘But through each and every donation you are providing the quiet support this family needs.’

Lorielle’s aunt, Sally Webb, told The Courier Mail her daughter Kiana, 17, had a special bond with Lorielle and her twin sister.

‘My baby girl loved becoming a triplet when they were all together,’ she said.

‘The love and beauty that fills (Lorielle’s mother) are within those two beautiful girls.

‘The pain in these times is weighing heavily on the family. You can see the happiness and beauty that shines through (her mother), (her twin) and now our angel Lorielle.’

Police said a report will be prepared for the coroner regarding the deaths.
