Malaysia’s National Film Development Corp (FINAS) told industry professionals this morning at Hong Kong’s Filmart that it has set a budget of RM 300 million ($76 million) for film investments, and the country’s existing cash rebate has been extended for another five years. 

The Film In Malaysia Incentive (FIMI) offers both local and international productions a 30% cash rebate on all qualifying Malaysian production expenditure, with an additional 5% rebate subject to a cultural test. The rebate was first introduced in 2013 and will remain in place for another five years, FINAS said this morning. 

FINAS also said that it has set an RM 300 million ($76 million) budget for investments in audiovisual infrastructure to be used across the next five years. 

International titles supported by Malaysia’s credit include Crazy Rich Asians, The Mandalorian, 6 Underground, Blackhat, and, most recently, the BBC’s Lord of the Flies series adaptation. FINAS CEO Azmir Saifuddin Bin Mutalib shared further information on how the country’s rebate has functioned in recent years during the session. He told the audience that the country has paid out RM580 million ($147 million) to 243 projects over 13 years.

Bin Mutalib also praised the country’s local box office figures during his session, stating that the country hit a record high in 2025, clocking RM244 million ($62 million) in receipts. That figure is up from RM125 million ($31 million) in 2014 and RM108 million ($27 million) in 2023.
