By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
There are 2 parts to my answer about whether employers care about LinkedIn profiles. The second may surprise you.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I help around workplace issues so job search, hiring better, managing, leading, being more effective in the workplace in general.
The question I want to answer in this video is do employers care about LinkedIn profiles? Now, I want to be clear there’s more than one part so hang in there as I get past the first one because the second one may surprise you. The first one is recruiters use LinkedIn as the new database. After all, there are 650 million people on LinkedIn as of the time of this recording, almost 700 million and thus once they have a LinkedIn recruiter account, they can search and search and find people for their firm.
It has replaced for many of them the need to receive resumes. They are out there recruiting people by keywords in your profile. So, yes, it matters to them from a hiring perspective.
Now, here’s the other part that I was promising at the beginning and that is for some firms, it bothers them that you have data in your LinkedIn profile and as I wrote for Forbes, there are firms out there who tell their employees, post hire, in other words, after you’ve accepted an offer and joined to get rid of everything in your profile. So, there’s no data about you and your experience. There is company name, there are dates of employment, title, that’s it.
So, from the standpoint of caring, they care because they’re aware of their conduct and they don’t want other people recruiting their staff. So, basically, what they’re doing is making you invisible and there are people in compliance in the organization who are looking for violators to have a talking to because they don’t want you to be contacted by other firms, by recruiters, by anyone for that matter about another job. So, yes, they care on both counts.
